Keep My Light Burning

Treatment Day February 19, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — sschaufe @ 1:57 pm

Today (Monday), I’ll have my second chemo treatment in the afternoon. I’m working in the morning, and then I’ll meet Mom at the treatment center this afternoon. She’s agreed to come and sit with me since Mark will be starting to train at the hardware store. I’m not ready to go to these appointments alone yet, so it is a great comfort having Mom by my side.

A lot of people ask me what the treatment is like…

The first thing they do is access my port and draw blood for my weekly counts (white blood cells and red blood cells). After the port, then we see either the doctor or a nurse practitioner for a quick update. Once I’m cleared for treatment, then we head back to the chemo room and join about 30 other people in a large room of lounge chairs and nurses. Each of these stops (above) has a waiting room and it’s totally unpredictable how long we will wait. Sometimes I’m through a waiting room in 5 minutes, but I’ve also had to sit for an hour.

The chemo nurses bring my medications to my chair and hook up the IV to my port. Each drug is given through the port using a specific dosage. They give me 2 pre-treatments for nauseau first, and then the start the actual chemo drugs. The Valpedine is given by “push”, which means the nurse pushes the medication into my port IV by hand with a syringe. The Herceptin is given by drip, and it takes about 45 minutes to drip a whole bag. After the drugs have all been given, they deaccess my port and I get to go home.

Thanks for your continued prayers and support. We truly feel we are being carried by everyone, and we love you all.

    Sandy,

Your name will be placed on our dining table and brought before the Lord each time we pray over our meal. I also wanted to send you the words to a song Dewey wrote on Valentine’s morning over breakfast. It will most likely be on the CD I’m recording in March.

    My Captain…by Dewey Roth 2/14/07

Sometimes the seas of my life are all glassy
Peaceful and calm as a morning in spring
But it seems that more often my boat is in turmoil
In need of the comfort that You, alone, bring

Hurricanes turn to the breath of Your Spirit
Filling my canvas and helping me sail
The journey’s not easy and waves come a-crashing
With You at the helm, I know I can’t fail

    You blow me away
Away to the coming of day
    The storm waves goodbye
As You burst through the sky
    I praise You
    You blow me away

I’d never wish for such storms to assail me
And yet, without fail, the trials inspire
You promise to always work things out for good
Whenever I’m sinking, Your grace lifts me higher

It’s not that You said You would stop the
    storm’s raging
Or hush the wind’s howling that tempts me to fear
It’s just that You promised to be with me always
Oh, Jesus, my captain, I’m glad that You’re here

    You blow me away
Away to the coming of day
    The storm waves goodbye
As You burst through the sky
    I praise You
    You blow me away

God Bless You, Sandy…sail with Christ
